Enemas, once known as clysters, have a long history. The practice dates back to ancient civilizations like Egypt and Babylonia, and it has been used throughout the ages for all sorts of purposes – treating ailments, detoxifying the body, and even for religious cleansing.

In the medieval and Renaissance periods, physicians, alchemists, herbalists with a basic knowledge of astrology would even time their treatments, like enemas, with the stars. It wasn’t just about the medicine – the cosmic order, conditions and timing all played a role in how these treatments were administered and their effectiveness.

These days, modern medicine and treatments like the Gerson Protocol might not always follow these universal rhythms, but they still recommend enemas for detoxing the body. Gerson’s therapy in cancer treatment involves daily coffee enemas, sometimes every few hours, to help detoxify the liver.

In ancient times, indigenous peoples of North America used tobacco smoke enemas to stimulate breathing and there’s a curious record in the Annals of the South African Museum, ( no pun intended) where the Bhaca people used an ox horn to administer water enemas.

Now, I’m not suggesting you rush out to find an ox horn or a tobacco smoke tube just yet 😊 Instead, let’s focus on the more straightforward enema bag – the kind that releases fluids like coffee, chlorine dioxide, or warm water into your body with gravity and discuss some general astrology recommendations as to the timing.

To illustrate the importance of enemas let’s imagine our bowels as the sewage system of our body. As the food waste continues down the digestive path, it is the last chance to absorb nutrients and water before the body excretes the waste. When the pipes are clear there is less tension in the system and reduces toxins. The liver we could imagine as filters in your sink. Anything we put in our body gets poured through this filter so keeping your diet clean, means your liver and bowels have less congestion. The liver through a series of ducts brings bile and pancreatic juices into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. If there is sludge lining walls of your intestines, not only are you backing up pressure and toxins in the digestive system but also backing up pressure in your liver and blood system. With a sludge lined bowel, not only does it slow the flow of your waste removal but you are not able to effectively digest your food and absorb water and nutrients through the little hair like structures in the small intestine called villi. The undigested food stays and becomes a putrid cesspool of bacteria, fungi, parasites and nanotechnology not unlike any stagnant pond of water and waste material in nature. The large intestines are the lower end pipes that absorb some remaining nutrients, electrolytes and vitamins produced by beneficial gut bacteria. So basically the health of your system is defined by the condition of bowels. Many nutritional practises focus upon what you are putting in your body but less are discussing how to effectively and efficiently get the waste out!

There are other simple important detox opportunities such as water fasting, skin brushing, sweating and rebounding but in this article the Enema is the star of the show.

Speaking about stars. When is the best time to do an enema? “Now”….would likely be the truest answer but from an astrological perspective, the two weeks after the full moon is ideal. The moon is believed to govern bodily fluids and elimination so some astrologers even suggest waiting until the waning Moon is also in a water sign like Cancer, Pisces or Scorpio. Virgo rules intestines and digestion, Mars focuses upon purification and detox and Saturn represents restriction and blockages, so these planets and aspects may be part of bowel discussions with a wellness astrologer . A birth chart analysis reveals key components to your health.

Here are some simple steps to doing an enema:

1. Prepare the Equipment

Get an enema kit (you can find these at most drug stores or online). It usually includes a bag or bucket, tubing, and a nozzle. Prepare your enema solution (this could be warm distilled water, coffee, chlorine dioxide solution, baking soda water or other solutions depending on your needs). Ensure the liquid is at a comfortable temperature (usually body temperature, around 98°F or 37°C).

2. Set Up the Enema

Hang the enema bag or bucket first lower than the nozzle and apply the lubricant to the tip of the nozzle and your anus. Coconut oil, olive oil or a water based lubricant. Add the fluid to the bag (2-3 cups) and release some from the tube into the toilet and then clamp the hose to ensure there is no air trapped in the hose or water coming out. Bend forward for best alignment of the rectum, breathe, inhale and relax the sphincter muscle around your oiled anus and slide the oiled nozzle gently about 2-4 inches. Once the nozzle is in your anus…. Hang enema bag about 2 feet (60 cm) above your body (on a towel rack, shower rod, or other stable spot) to use gravity to bring the fluid from the bag through the hose and into your rectum.

3. Position Yourself

Lay down on your left side, with your knees pulled toward your chest (a position called recovery or the Sims’ position) You can also do it in the bathtub or on a towel on the floor if you are worried about making a mess. Generally if you are releasing the fluid slowly you are able to hold it into your bowel for 5-15 minutes until you have to have a bowel movement.

4. Release the Solution

Once you are laying down on your left side, in a fetal position… Slowly open the clamp on the tubing to allow the enema solution to flow slowly into your rectum. The liquid should flow gradually; so you have a chance to accommodate, don’t rush. If you feel discomfort or cramping, slow the flow or stop for a moment.

5. Hold the Solution

Once all the solution has been introduced, lay quietly.

Try to hold the liquid for as long as you can (usually 5 to 15 minutes). This allows the enema to work effectively. If you feel a strong urge to release it earlier, go ahead, clamp the hose, get up and go to the toilet and empty your bowels. The more you do it the more practised at the routine you become. Be gentle with yourself. Once all the fluid is released from the bag into your rectum you could stand up go to the toilet to remove the nozzle and let any extra fluid in the bag run through. Hold the fluid in as long as you can then sit on the toilet and empty your bowel.

6. Clean Up

Clean the enema equipment thoroughly after use, following the instructions provided with your kit. Chlorine dioxide is a safe cleaner for the non-metal varieties in running through the bag after use and disinfecting the nozzle.

7. Relax and Rehydrate

After the procedure, give yourself time to relax and rehydrate. It’s a good idea to drink plenty of filtered water with a little Celtic salt afterward to help with hydration and support your body’s natural detox process. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the large intestine, is linked to emotions like grief and letting go while the liver is associated with anger and resentment so releasing the physical toxins in your liver and bowel, often will help you release the stored emotional toxins too! Enjoy the sense of calm that comes with the spiritual purity of a clean bowel.

Consult with a healthcare provider if you’re new to enemas, especially for therapeutic purposes, or if you have any questions or specific health concerns! There are a few contraindications to this procedure for those with extreme health conditions such as an impacted bowel, large tumor, prolapsed rectum or in cases of cardiac arrest or coma but most people will have untold benefits in this procedure.

Other Astro notes.......It is no coinincidence that I am writing this article on the eve of a Full Moon and Total South Node Lunar Eclipse at 23° Virgo on March 14th, 2025.  With the opposition to Saturn (at 22° Pisces), and also a very tight, almost exact trine to Uranus (at 24° Taurus) suggests a systemic change or a sudden shift that was long overdue so it is no wonder I am about enemas.  Certainly an enema is a virgo health practise that deals with unexpected releases driven by the "loose" sextile to Mars bringing these divine principles into the bowels of humanity 😊
