The full moon Libra arrives Saturday April 12, 2025 at 8:22 PM EDT so I thought we'd take a spin around some science-based, full moon, health practices to optimize your experience. In a full moon the Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a straight line with the Sun on one side of the sky and the Moon on the other, which creates an increased gravitational pull. Given these push-pull physics, the tides are higher on a full moon. If the moon can have an effect on a large body of water like the tides of the ocean, imagine the implications for the microcosm of our bodies that are 60-70% water! You are basically a large water balloon with a nervous system 😊 Studies and biological patterns suggest the full moon may also influence things like sleep, mood, and hormone rhythms. So here’s a moon manual from a practical, evidence-informed perspective:

1. Optimize Sleep

What science says: Several studies (like those in Current Biology, 2013) suggest people may sleep more shallow and for shorter durations around a full moon—even in controlled, light-free environments.

What to do:

  • Avoid caffeine, especially after 2 PM

  • Reduce blue light exposure. Wear blue light blocking glasses when on computer

  • Use blackout curtains or a sleep mask

  • Try chamomile tea, magnesium glycinate or L-theanine for relaxation

2. Track Your Circadian Rhythms

Why it matters: Your body’s melatonin production (which regulates sleep) is sensitive to light. A brighter night—like during a full moon—can interfere with that signal.

Helpful habit:

  • Keep a consistent sleep-wake schedule, following our natural light cycles

  • Use red-toned, incandescent, dim lighting at night that is below eye level

  • Try a natural sunlight or full spectrum lamp in the morning to anchor your circadian clock

3. Support Hydration and Lymphatic Flow

Why now: The full moon can lead to bloating or fluid retention (possibly due to sleep disruption, hormonal shifts or parasitic migration).

What helps:

  • Stay hydrated (2–3L/day) of celtic salt in water (1/2- 1 teaspoon of salt per liter.)

  • Light physical activity like walking, rebounding or stretching

  • Consider dry skin brushing or light massage to support lymphatic movement

4. Cycle Syncing & Parasitic Cleansing

Earth Science : Research links the menstrual cycle to lunar phases—though this varies person-to-person. If menstruation starts near the full moon, women's most fertile phase would occur near the most fertile time of the earth... the new moon. As the moon represents our mother and the divine feminine within us, it is a great time to appreciate this feminine force that gives us the light and love through the darkest nights. Our light is birthed out of the dark waters of the womb. Other cycles: There is some evidence to suggest parasites migrate to the intestines to mate and lay eggs in the watery full moon. During this time and for a few weeks after, as the moon is waning and releasing energy, it's a great time to do a parasitic cleanse. Good time for:

  • Parasite cleansing cocktails (turpentine & castor oil, chlorine dioxide or pineapple and pumpkin seeds)—make sure to take them on an empty stomach.

  • Iron-rich foods for a boost during menstruation.

  • Foster gratitude for the divine feminine energy that birthed you & our next generation

5. Mind-Body Regulation (Stress + Mood)

What the data says: Changes in sleep and light exposure (like during a full moon) may elevate cortisol and impact mood. Some people report higher anxiety or emotional intensity. The word "lunatic" originates from the Latin word lunaticus meaning "of the moon" or "moonstruck" as it is believed that mental or neurological disorders are also influenced by the moon.

Try:

  • 10–20 minutes of mindfulness meditation

  • Box breathing or vagus nerve stimulation

  • Journaling for cognitive offloading (shown to reduce anxiety)

    6. Exercise to Burn Cortisol

Why it works: Exercise is your anti-cortisol weapon, a built-in stress release valve that also helps you sleep—essential when the moon is keeping you awake with its glowing energy.

    Examples:

    • Brisk walk or jog under the moonlight.

    • Bodyweight strength training—lift, squats, and feel good.

    • Stretching + breathing exercises post-workout to reset and de-stress.. Exercise to Burn Cortisol

7. Light Eating at Night

Why it matters: Poor sleep from the full moon can cause dysfunction in ghrelin and leptin, the hormones that control hunger and satiety. Incidentally blue light from TV's, phones and computer screens also affects these hormones, carbohydrate metabolism and causes weight gain.

Practical move:

  • Eat your heavier meals earlier in the day

  • Avoid screen time and refined sugar or heavy carbs before bed

  • Include protein + fiber at dinner to stabilize blood sugar

8. Reflective Practice Why journal? Reflection activates the prefrontal cortex, calming emotional centers like the amygdala. Gratitude opens your heart to smooth your edges. This can be helpful during periods of emotional volatility of full moon.

Journal prompts supported by neuropsychology research:

  • “What are three things I’m grateful for today?”

  • “What’s something I did well recently?”

  • “What am I ready to release that’s not serving me?”

A Full Moon in Libra—specifically this is a powerful time for balance, relationships, and personal harmony. Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and aesthetics, so this full moon can really highlight partnerships, diplomacy, and fairness. It's a great time to focus on balancing the scales your inner world and your outer world in relationships with others. Full Moon Affirmations for Libra

  • "I am love and appreciate the harmony in my relationships."

  • "I release imbalances and embrace fairness, love, and beauty."

  • "I love and honor myself as I love and honor others." The Full Moon in Libra will affect different zodiac signs in varying ways, depending on their element, quality, and how they align with the energy of Libra. Generally, it will have the most significant impact on the signs that are in direct opposition to Libra (since full moons are about opposition and balance), as well as those with air and cardinal influences.
